jhrUKing’s is looking for Digital Ambassadors

The goal: To mobilize our networks to assist us in our mission to raise and spread human rights awareness with the use of new and digital media.

Spreading the word: The core task of the Digital Ambassador is to share information about JHR ’s programs and human rights in general by using the various social media tools that they already access on a daily basis. The Social Media Coordinator will send a bi-weekly calendar through email to JHR’s team of Digital Ambassadors with the most relevant and pressing information.

Brainstorming ideas and providing feedback: Digital Ambassadors will be frequently consulted for feedback on JHR’s online as well as related offline engagement campaigns and projects. They will help to determine what our audience is interested in, contribute specific content ideas, notify us of opportunities or news stories, and may even occasionally create content for JHR.

Responsibilities:

  • Be an active participant in our online communities (i.e.: comment on our Facebook page, retweet JHR posts on twitter, share JHR produced videos, photo’s and articles, take part in online group chats, encourage friends to read JHR fields notes and success stories, encourage friends to become digital ambassadors.)
  • Rebroadcast all material sent to you by JHR’s social media coordinator on your personal and/or professional social media networks. New featured content to publicize on your Facebook, twitter and other SM accounts will be sent to you bi-weekly. Digital Ambassadors must make at least ten tweets and three posts each week.
  • Check JHR’s website for new information, human rights news, success stories and publicize new JHR content on a consistent basis.
  • Maintain political impartiality on issues when representing JHR.
Interested? Sign up here and send us an email at jhrkings@gmail.com. We’ll get you started with the Digital Ambassadors welcome package.

THIS MONTH IN REVIEW

In late-February, jhrUKing’s teamed up with Dalhousie International Development Studies students Rebecca Singbeil and James Jenkinson for a screening of 8th Fire.

“This four-part CBC miniseries explores the 500-year-old relationship between Canada’s Aboriginal and settler communities. It argues that now is the time for these two communities to work together to transform their relationship into one based on justice and harmony. Host Wab Kinew and other engaging Aboriginal voices reveal their perspectives on the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit experience today. They take us far beyond common misconceptions and stereotypes, and introduce us to a dynamic, diverse, and rapidly growing community that cannot be ignored or repressed.”

We showed the first two episodes: “Indigenous in the City” and “It’s Time!” To view these clips and tons of additional information related to 8th Fire, check out their webpage on CBC.ca.

We thank everyone who joined us for this fun and informative evening.

A simple campaign asks a big question

A new Investigation by Natascia Lypny into the Can You Solve This? campaign coming to Halifax.

Campaign coordinator Emad Talisman and volunteer Pegah Atbin man the Can You Solve This? station at Mount Saint Vincent University (Natascia Lypny photo).

A small group of Mount Saint Vincent students launched the Halifax chapter of the Can You Solve This? campaign on Jan. 9.

This international effort targets the Iranian government’s systematic denial of education to various groups of students based on their religious and political beliefs.

“It’s been hard to maintain consistency with these movements, to get people to weigh in, and to participate in a meaningful way,” says Halifax campaign coordinator Emad Talisman of similar endeavors to tackle human rights protection in Iran. “Our campaign is a little bit different in that its focus is somewhat more pointed.”

Talisman highlights two goals the campaign hopes to accomplish: first, to raise awareness of the Iranian government’s violation of Article 13 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which declares an equal accessibility to education; second, to engage participants in letter-writing to pressure local as well as Iranian political representatives to enact change.

Field Notes

A jhr Intern’s Perspective on Rights Media Journalism

Laura Bain as featured on jhr's "Field Notes" web page.

When: Friday, December 2 @ noon

Where: J-School computer lab (3rd floor of the King’s A&A building)

What: Current King’s journalism student Laura Bain presents stories and photographs from her six-month internship with jhr in Ghana. She will describe jhr‘s approach to media development and the creation of Rights Media. She will also discuss how she got involved with jhr, the projects she’s worked on, and the opportunities that she has been afforded because of this experience.

Bio (adapted from the jhr website): Laura Bain is no stranger to Journalists for Human Rights, or Ghana, for that matter. She spent three months in Ghana in 2010 with jhr as a radio intern in Kumasi. At Kapital FM, Bain helped to produce a weekly human rights radio program called “Know Your Rights.” She worked on stories about the rights of children and sex workers in Ghana, in addition to a piece about the maltreatment of prisoners in the country.

For her most recent jhr internship beginning in January 2011, she was stationed at the African University College of Communications (AUCC), where she worked with faculty and students to host workshops, develop curriculum and support campus media.

Before joining jhr, Bain studied Professional Writing at York University, where she was a columnist for community newspaper, Excaliber and an editor at an arts and literature journal, Existere.
